If your skin is red and itchy and the texture, skin’s color, or appearance has changed you have a rash. The rash can appear all over the body or show up in large patches in certain areas of the body. Rashes may be caused by by issues like eczema, psoriasis, allergies, insect bites, mites, acne, excessive sweating, or contact with certain poisonous plants like poison ivy or oak. Soaps, detergents, shampoos or cosmetics that do not suit your skin can also lead to rashes. Rashes may also be some symptoms of certain fungal, bacterial, or viral infections. Be warned that if you have a rash for more than a few days you should consult a doctor.
1. Olive Oil
Extra-virgin olive oil works as a great skin moisturizer that will facilitate healing and promoting skin renewal. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E (vitamin E is a great healing agent for skin.) It can reduce itching and soothe the skin.
- Simply rub extra-virgin olive oil or a combination of equal parts of olive oil and honey on your rash a few times daily until it heals completely.
- Alternatively, you can add a little turmeric powder to some olive oil and apply it two or three times a day for a few days. Packed with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric soothes rashes and relieves itching.
In addition to olive oil, castor oil and coconut oil help heal rashes naturally. A combination of vitamin E oil and cod liver oil is another popular remedy.
2. Baking Soda
Baking Soda dries out skin rashes and it relieves the itching and inflammation caused by rashes. So, baking soda has more uses than just keeping your refrigerator sweet-smelling.
- Add one part baking soda to three parts water. Apply the mixture on the affected area. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Do this once daily for a few days.
- You can also mix baking soda with some coconut oil to make a paste and apply it on your rash. Leave it on for about five minutes and then rinse it off. Repeat this once or twice daily until you see improvement.
This is a strange one but oatmeal can help skin rashes. It can relieve skin inflammation and irritation because of its powerful soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It works very effectively on rashes caused by poison ivy, eczema, sunburn, chickenpox and allergies.
- Grind oatmeal in a blender, food processor or coffee grinder. Mix one cup of finely ground oatmeal in warm bath water. Soak in it for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Do this daily until the rash is gone.
- Alternatively, combine one-half cup of oatmeal, one-quarter cup of milk powder and two teaspoons of honey. Put this mixture in a muslin cloth, tie it strongly with a string, ribbon or rubber band, and place it in a bathtub filled with warm water. Soak in the milky bath water for at least 15 minutes. Finally pat dry and moisturize your skin. Repeat daily for a few days.
- For rashes on your face, apply a thick paste of equal amounts of oatmeal and plain yogurt mixed with a little honey. Leave it on for about half an hour before washing it off. Do this daily until you see improvement.
4. Aloe Vera
It is not surprising that aloe vera would be a home remedy for skin rashes. It is used in a lot of skin care products. There are many types of aloe vera skin products on the market. They are used for dr, itchy skin to moisturize it and regenerate the skin. It has notable anti-inflammatory, emollient, antibacterial and antifungal properties which make it ideal for treating many types of skin ailments including rashes. Apart from healing, it also soothes the skin, relieves itching and reduces redness.
- Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf.
- Apply it on the affected area.
- Leave it on for at least 20 minutes, and then rinse it off.
- Do this at least three times a day until the rash clears.
- If you do not have fresh aloe vera gel, you can buy aloe vera gel or extract.
5. Cold Compress
One of the oldest and most used home remedies for skin rashes is a cold compress. It is effective on skin rashes caused by heat, insect bites, poison ivy and shingles. It is beneficial to use on rashes to reduce inflammation and inhibit tching. It works well on rashes that have developed blisters on them.
- Put ice cubes in a sealed plastic bag and place it on the affected area for a few minutes. Repeat a few times daily for a few days.
- Alternatively, you can simply soak a clean washcloth in ice-cold water and place it on the rash for about 10 minutes.
Note: Do not put ice cubes directly on the skin.
6. Apple Cider Vinegar
You would think by the very nature of apple cider vinegar it would inflame and make a rash itch all the more. But natural organic apple cider vinegar is excellent for treating rashes and eliminate itching. Moreover, its acetic acid content helps fight skin infections that could be causing or aggravating the problem.
- Dip a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and place it on the affected area.
- Leave it on for a few minutes, and then remove the cotton ball.
- Do this several times a day for a few days or until your rash clears.
Note: If apple cider vinegar causes irritation, try diluting it with water before applying it. If the irritation persists, then try another remedy.
What good would a tea or essential oil have on skin rashes? Apparently quite a bit because chamomile offers a lot of protection like the other home remedies mentioned offer. Chamomile soothes the skin and relieves itching, reduces inflammation and promotes healing due to its powerful anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, it has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. With all these properties available chamomile can do nothing but kill any skin rash it is applied to.
- Soak a clean washcloth in chamomile tea and place it on the affected area as a compress. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this at least two or three times a day for a few days.
- You can also use chamomile essential oil by diluting a couple of drops in two teaspoons of coconut oil or another carrier oil. Apply it a few times daily until the rash is gone.
Neem is an unknown home remedy to treat skin rashes but it is said to be quite effective in the fight against skin rashes. Because of its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-irritant, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties, neem (also known as Indian lilac or margosa) is highly effective in treating a number of skin ailments including eczema, scabies, rashes, acne, psoriasis and various infections. It contains antioxidants that fight free radicals and it slows down the aging process. It can all so rejuvenate skin cells keeping the skin bright and young-looking.
- Simmer a handful of neem leaves in water for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain the solution and allow it to cool. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and place it on the affected area for at least 10 minutes. Do this a couple of times daily for a few days.
- You can also use neem products, such as neem leaf extract, soap, cream, or lotion. When applying neem oil, make sure to dilute it with carrier oil or water as it is too strong to use alone.
This sounds more like a calendar manufacturing company than a treatment against skin rashes. Calendula is an excellent herb for soothing skin irritations, rashes, ulcers, eczema, dry skin, wounds and bruises due to its anti-inflammatory, astringent, antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. These are some super properties calendula carries.
- Apply calendula oil on the affected area and leave it on for a few hours. Do this at least twice daily until the rash heals completely. Calendula-infused olive oil can also be used in the same way. To make this oil, pour a generous amount of olive oil over calendula flowers (let them wilt for about 12 hours to remove moisture) in an uncovered container and place it in a double boiler. Heat it over low heat (temperature should stay around 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for three to five hours, strain the oil and store it in a glass jar.
- Alternatively, add a few drops of calendula oil to bathwater and soak in it for 15 minutes, or use calendula tea as a compress.
- You can also apply calendula cream, lotion, or ointment a few times a day until the rash clears.
Coriander is perceived to be an effective Ayurvedic(the traditional Hindu system of medicine, which is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing.) method for treating itchy and irritated skin caused by skin rashes. This is because of its anti-irritant, soothing, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Its inviting scent is also calming and relaxing.
- Apply a paste of ground coriander leaves on the affected area, leave it on for at least half an hour, and then wash it off. Do this once or twice a day for a few days. (When grinding the leaves, you need not add water.)
- Boil one teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water. Drink this tea once daily for a few days until the rash heals completely.
- You can also drink a cup of fresh coriander juice for a few days.

Anti-inflammatory flavonoid found powerfully in red wine, green tea and onions. Quercetin has been shown to reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.
Green superfood drink
Supports detoxification and alkalizes the body. This one sounds iffy and there is no clinical evidence to support it is a good treatment for skin rashes.
12. Bentonite Clay
First off you will never eat this clay. The ramifications of this error are obvious. This treatment will be applied topically only and keep it away from the eyes. The clay will reduce toxins and kill inflammation. It has the ability to build immunity with on the skin to fight these rashes from coming back. This is a wonderful agent for treating skin rashes. Apply it to the affected skin areas and leave it on for two hours. Rinse off after two hours. It is like making a clay facial mask.Supports detoxification and alkalizes the body.
13. Cocoa Butter
This is a new treatment to get rid of skin rashes. Cocoa butter contains compounds called cocoa mass polyphenols, which some studies have found can help diminish signs of aging, plus soothe sensitive skin suffering from rashes. Polyphenols are types of antioxidants that will cause healing when consumed internally and applied topically. Particularly, cocoa’s polyphenols have been found by various studies to o fight various chronic diseases, degeneration of the skin, sensitivities and even cell mutations. Important: make sure the cocoa butter contains no alcohol, fragrance, or any other types of additives. These additives will irritate, inflame, and make the skin worse off than before you applied the cocoa butter to the skin.

Essential oils can be quite effective in stopping skin rashes but they need to be applied directly to the affected area. The best essential oils to use on skin rashes are geranium, rose and lavender to help reduce the effects of the skin rash.
Simply combine three drops of oil with a half teaspoon of coconut oil and apply it to the problem area three times per day. Repeat this treatment until the desired effects are reached.
- Using a double-boiler (or you can use a heat-safe glass bowl that fits in a pan with a couple of inches of water), place the cocoa butter and grapeseed oil in the pan or bowl. Cocoa butter is an amazing ingredient because it has the natural ability to soothe irritated skin.
- Meanwhile, the debate about whether grapeseed oil is a healthy food is still out there, in regard to ingesting it. However, it’s great for your skin because of its vitamin E and moisturizing fatty acids. Rashes can cause drying of the skin and that makes grape seed oil a smart ingredient. Keeping the heat on low, gently melt the two ingredients while stirring.
- Next, add the aloe vera gel and blend well. Nature created a gem of a plant with the healing qualities of aloe vera, which dates back as far as 1935 with a study reporting the rapid relief from the itching and burning that aloe vera provides.
- Now, remove from heat and add the witch hazel, bentonite clay and lavender. Witch hazel acts as an astringent fighting bacteria while helping to reduce inflammation. Bentonite clay is phenomenal due to its ability to draw out impurities and toxins, which can really help the healing move along much faster.
- You will notice the mixture forming a paste as you add the bentonite clay. Continue stirring, adding the witch hazel to help achieve the desired consistency. It will produce a thick paste, like a mask, or you can make it thinner by adding a little purified water. Add the lavender essential oil, which is a favorite ingredient of mine because of the antimicrobial properties it contains.
- Place the mixture into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. This DIY rash cream serves another purpose, too. You can even use this as a mask on your face to help improve your skin and use as another great home remedy for acne.
