It is reported that at least one in every 6 people of ages between 14 and 49 years is infected with the herpes virus. The simplex virus of type 1 and 2, abbreviated as HSV 1 and HSV 2 is known to be the cause of herpes.  Oral herpes caused by type 1, occurs around the mouth area where fever blisters are visible. Genital herpes most commonly caused by type 2 occurs on the genitals.

In some cases, the virus can be dormant in the body and no outbreaks are seen. Though there may be no outbreaks, the virus can remain dormant for many years, and unfortunately, the infected person can still spread the virus.  Though we may not be able to eradicate the virus from our bodies, we can adapt ways of living with it.

The outbreaks are in the form of red bumps like blisters on the skin which are mainly itchy and painful.  Other signs are swelling of the lymph nodes, headaches, and flu. All the symptoms might not be experienced in every outbreak, but common ones are cold sores or mouth blisters.  Once the virus has entered the body it cannot be cured. Therefore, an individual carries it throughout life but the symptoms can be managed with natural products such as essential oils.

Many side effects attributed to drugs prescribed by doctors have made individuals choose natural treatment instead of them.  Natural remedies, which can be used in the diluted form are considered safe, effective and affordable.

Traditionally and religiously over many centuries, essential oils have been used for various diseases.  However, treatment of herpes using essential oils is a pretty new concept to many.

Essential oils have become ingredients of many cosmetic products due to their effectiveness in fighting the ever-increasing skin ailments. The antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties of essential oils have made it easy and affordable to combat the recurring herpes virus.

Major Causes of Herpes

Herpes disease is spread through direct contact.  The virus does not survive outside the body. Sharing utensils, kissing and sexual contact are common activities that could transmit the virus.  The virus does cause immediate symptoms unless the body immunity is compromised.

There are many cases reported of recurrence of outbreaks though the causes are not yet determined.  However, triggers have been identified such as processed foods, alcohol, coffee and other drugs. When the virus is active, patients are advised to avoid citrus and other juices.

For centuries, essential oils have been used as remedies of herpes virus due to their antiviral capabilities.  Despite the herpes virus being stubborn, there is hope for treating its symptoms at comfortable levels.

Below we have a list of essential oils available for treatment of HSV type 1 and type 2.

These essential oils are Melissa, lavender, peppermint, geranium, tea tree, coconut, eucalyptus, sandalwood, myrrh, oregano, St John’s wort and chamomile.  Experts in this field recommend the use of these essential oils for the treatment of herpes outbreaks.

It was reported that peppermint has a virucidal effect on the treatment of herpes.  Viral suspension tests confirmed that peppermint oil has high levels of virucidal actions against herpes (HSV-1 and 2).  It also reduces the concentration of viral particles by 82 to 92 % at a noncytotoxic concentration of peppermint oil. The results were even better at higher levels of the oil in reducing the viruses of HSV 1 and 2.

Peppermint oil has a lipophilic nature allowing penetration into the skin thus making it ideal for therapeutic use in the tropics.

Incubation of both HSV with peppermint oil given a specific time period of 3 hours, showed an antiviral activity of approximately 99%.  During this study, the researcher kept adding peppermint oil randomly

To determine the mode of antiviral action of the essential oil, peppermint oil was added at different times to the cells or viruses during infection. Thus, this essential oil is capable of exerting a direct virucidal effect on HSV

Natural oils do not have similar medicinal properties and dosage, the reason why it is essential to consult an expert for advice.  Some individuals may experience allergies to some oils, and testing before use is advisable by doing a patch test before application of any oil.

Essential oils can be used as a natural alternative to current drug-based remedies. Their role in prevention of outbreaks is uncertain. During outbreaks, it is advisable to avoid intimate contact until the sores crust over or are gone completely.
