Essential oils are extracted by a process of steam or water distillation of the leaves, bark, petals, flowers, needles, seeds, or roots of plants. The only exception is citrus oils which are cold pressed from the rind of citrus fruits.
Essential oils are very concentrated, and a little oil goes a long way. Although they are natural substances, they contain active compounds which can interact with the body’s chemistry, so they must be used safely and correctly. Oils are not actually ‘oily,’ they are very light and absorb very quickly into the skin as they are made up of tiny molecules.
