Pine essential oil is what you use when you go camping. You know to give you that outdoor feeling. Let you you know you are really in the great outdoors. It gives you that real sense that you are out in the wild away from it all. But there could be more to pine essential oil than meets the eye.
Everyone who has had a sinus infection can tell you how miserable they feel and how painful they are. It seems like a lot of people are turning to unconventional treatments for sinus infections or sinus congestion.
Psoriasis is defined as a skin disease marked by red, itchy, scaly patches. So, essential oils are supposed to help treat psoriasis a skin disease that leaves red,itchy, and scaly patches on the skin. Essential oils have been known to treat a lot of different conditions but psoriasis? The only way it would seem reasonable for essential oils to help this skin disease is to apply it topically to the skin disease. So do essential oils really help to treat psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a very tough skin disease to treat so it might be advisable to consult a doctor before you start using essential oils to treat this skin disease. The disease can be caused by many factors such as stress, antibiotic use, heredity, chronic stress, food allergies or an under-functioning liver can all be potential culprits. Let’s get to the oils!
It is said that lavender essential oil as the most versatile therapeutic oil around today. This is because it is remarkably restorative to the skin and is said to be able to treat all skin conditions. It can treat the following skin conditions abscesses, acne, allergies, boils, bruises, burns, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, sores, sunburns… etc. It is legendary for treating any skin condition that may appear on the skin. It has calming and anti-inflammatory properties are able to quickly heal and restore psoriasis ridden skin. It soothes dry, flakey skin, and calms inflammation while renewing and promoting new skin growth and healing. Lavender blends well with most oils including citrus, florals, cedarwood, clove, clary sage, pine, geranium, labdanum, oakmoss, vetiver, patchouli.
Relaxing Lavender Oatmeal Bath: Run a warm bath, throw in a handful of colloidal oatmeal, ¼ cup of dead sea salt and 3 to 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Soak in it for at least 25 minutes to soothe painful, itchy and inflamed psoriasis.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is a multifaceted plant healing resource. It is a potent essential oil. Tea tree essential oil is so effective in healing psoriasis because of anti-viral, anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. Tea tree while it treats the psoriasis also prevents infection while reducing inflammation and stimulating the immune system to support your skin health.
Cotton Ball Application: Place a few drops of tea tree essential oil on a cotton ball and press it on the psoriasis patches to disinfect and soothe the itchy and painful area.
Myrrh Essential Oil
Myrrh is known to have powerful healing properties that sooth chapped, flakey, and cracked skin. It may ease the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, rashes and it can even reduce stretch marks! It also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antifungal qualities that help to support the skin so that the body an effectively heal and restore new skin cells to proper functioning at a quickened rate. Applying myrrh to the skin topically does more than heal psoriasis it also acts as a preventive agent against developing stretch marks which blocks premature aging from developing.
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Cedarwood essential oil can balance both dry and oily skin conditions. In other words it will not let the skin became too dry or too oily. Furthermore, it helps to cleanse the skin from impurities that cause help psoriasis to develop. It’s potent diuretic properties make it a valuable oil to help treat cellulite, fluid retention and the accumulation of toxins. And its astringent properties make sure that the skin retains its tightness and it remains high functioning.
Itchy Psoriasis Rash Treatment: In a dark amber glass dropper bottle, combine ¼ cup of evening primrose oil, ¼ cup of olive oil and 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil. Apply a liberal amount of this blend on the itchy psoriasis rashes at night time.
Angelica Essential Oil
This oil is a natural detox oil especially for the skin. It has diuretic properties that help support the removal of waste and toxins from the body and the skin. It brightens dead skin and helps to clear marks or diseases from the skin like psoriasis. It clears out cellulite, boosts the immune system functioning, and it is said to help improve liver function. How it helps to support liver function sounds unreasonable. It is hard to conceive that an essential oil can improve liver function. It is important for those who suffer from psoriasis to address the function of their liver. How liver function relates to psoriasis development is not known.
DIY Essential Oil Based Psoriasis Treatments
DIY Psoriasis Massage Oil Blend
- 0 drops borage seed oil
- 30 drops evening primrose oil
- 15 drops tea tree EO
- 10 drops bergamot EO
- 10 drops thyme EO
- 10 drops niaouli EO
- 1/2 cup grapeseed or sweet almond oil
- In a 2 oz glass bottle combine your ingredients, adding your grapeseed or sweet almond oil last
- Shake to blend
- Fill your tub with warm water
- While filling in a non-reactive bowl combine 1 tsp of your psoriasis massage blend with 1 cup of finely ground rolled oats
- Once your tub is filled add this mixture to the water and agitate it to disperse
- Soak in the water for 30 minutes
- Gently rub floating ingredients into your skin while soaking. Avoid scrubbing harshly
Hand or Footbath Treatment:
- Add 1 tsp of your psoriasis massage oil blend to a basin of warm water
- Agitate to disperse oil
- Soak desired area/limb for 20 minutes
- Massage gently floating droplets into inflamed skin
- After showering, while your skin is still damp, massage the psoriasis massage oil blend all over your body or just where your skin is breaking out
- Using your fingertip rub the blend gently over your affected areas several times daily
- If you feel any discomfort from the oil try increasing the grapeseed / sweet almond oil ratio
DIY Thick Psoriasis Lotion Blend
- 5 tsp avocado oil
- 5 tsp borage seed or evening primrose oil
- 15 drops tea tree EO
- 5 drops myrrh EO
Combine ingredients in a non-reactive bowl and apply at least twice daily to trouble areas.
Symptomatic Relief Formula for Eczema and Psoriasis Blend
- 4 ounces vitamin E cream
- 20 drops lavender EO
- 5 drops carrot seed EO
- 5 drops geranium EO
- 4 drops bay EO
Add 1 tsp castor oil for particularly damaged skin. Castor oil works to help reduce scar tissue, minor burns, insect bites and stings.
Simple Vinegar Calming Scalp Treatment
- 5 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 3 ounces lavender water / hydrosol / hydrolat
- 10 drops lavender EO
- 10 drops tea tree EO
- Combine ingredients
- Shake well
- Apply several times a week
Simple Calming Bath Treatment
- A few handfuls of epsom salt
- A few drops of your choice of the recommended essential oils that are listed above
Timeless Thyme Essential Oil
Thymol, a highly toxic element found in thyme, is a very potent antiseptic. This make thyme very effective in treating psoriasis and other skin ailments. Blend thyme with a carrier oil and apply over affected areas for substantial relief.
Geranium oil produces very good effects when applied to skin. It is said geranium essential oil revitalizes the skin cells. So it reaches into the cellular level of the skin. One expert says that this is single most important essential to use for the treatment of psoriasis.
Geranium Gel: Place 4 tbsp of aloe vera gel in a small glass jar. Mix in 5 to 7 drops of geranium essential oil. Apply on the psoriasis to seal in moisture and cool down the inflammation.
Rose Essential Oil
Rose essential oil is used to treat psoriasis because of its calming properties. The oil smells very good and has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It also is supposed to calm the mind. Rse essential oil is so strong it only requires a dab to treat this skin disease. Always mix it with some other oil because it is just too strong to use by itself.
Juniper oil is a stimulates blood circulation and may be able to help in purifying the blood. The connection between it being an essential oil and being able to purify blood is unknown. These abilities make it a profound treatment for psoriasis. This oil can be diffused, applied topically, and inhaled. It also comes in condiments as a food grade additive and this sounds very unhealthy. Juniper essential oil can be irritation to people. Pregnant women are advised not to use this oil because it could cause birth defects. Children should not use juniper essential either.
Helichrysum Essential Oil
This oil is also known as “immortelle” oil. It is very effective for reducing the symptoms of psoriasis. It can relieve inflammation and headaches while promoting the healing of wounds and attacking fungal infections. Do not use this oil internally there will be repercussions. It can be used through a diffuser or topically.
Roll-On Recipe: Fill a 10ml roll-on bottle with borage seed oil and add 3 to 5 drops of helichrysum essential oil. Shake well. Gently roll on the scaly skin to lock moisture, soothe and get instant relief.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Essential Oil (eucalyptus fructicetorum) is effective for psoriasis and stuffy acne. Eucalyptus oil should never be taken internally or applied directly to the facial skin without diluting it first.. It comes in food dose amounts.
Peppermint Essential Oil
This oil is effective for treating psoriasis because of its formidable healing powers. If you use this oil know that mild skin irritation may accompany its use. There are also known unwanted effects with using this essential oil but it is safe to take internally or applied topically. This doesn’t add up to take this oil internally it would be best not to do this.
Cooling Spritz: Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup of distilled water and add 5 to 7 drops of peppermint essential oil. Shake well and spritz on the itchy and painful lesions for a cooling relief.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary Essential oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) may be effective in treating psoriasis but there may be some question to its usefulness. The antioxidants present in the oil protect the skin from damage and render support for the skin. These are not compelling reasons to say it will help with psoriasis. It can be taken orally even though it shouldn’t be and it can be applied topically. Don’t use it if you are pregnant or if you have epilepsy.
Patchouli Essential Oil
Patchouli Essential oil or it is also known as “Agastache Pogostemon” is said to work wonders in treating psoriasis. It is safe when taken in food amounts but do not ever take it internally despite the fact some experts say it is safe to take internally. It can be taken externally or in a blend with perfumes.
Healing Blend: In an applicator bottle, combine 5 to 7 drops of patchouli essential oil in ½ cup of apricot kernel oil.
Charming Chamomile Essential Oil
Chamomile essential oil works fairly well with psoriasis, dermatitis and other skin conditions. You can diffuse it or rub two or three drops on your forehead just before you go to bed or if you actually have a psoriasis break out.
Bergamot Essential Oil
Bergamot essential oil has calming effects and you can either apply the oil topically or diffuse it into the air. The oil can be used as a food supplement or deodorant and is safe to use for children. How any of these facts explains how it will treat psoriasis is unknown. It could be ineffective in treating psoriasis.
Night Time Healing Blend: Fill a small amber glass dropper bottle halfway with jojoba oil, add 3 tsp of sweet almond oil and 10 drops of bergamot essential oil. Shake well to mix. Gently massage a few drops on the affected areas at night time before bed.
Coconut Essential Oil
This oil is a wonderful moisturizer and has powerful antibacterial properties. It is perfect for treating psoriasis, acne, and eczema.
Andiroba Essential Oil
The mystic acid in andiroba oil checks the overgrowth of skin cells which leads to psoriasis. The linolenic acid in the oil restores the regular life cycle and controls the expansion of skin cells. How it treats psoriasis is not known. The two acids contained in this oil make it an unsafe agent to be applying topically to the skin. This is a relatively unknown essential oil which could be a problem. If no one has ever used or heard of it then how effective can it be? The term “mystic acid” is alarming and ambiguous because the composition of the acid is unknown.
Borage Seed Essential Oil
Borage essential oil contains large amounts of linolenic acid. The acid can contain psoriasis but again it has acid in it which makes it harmful to apply to the skin. This oil should not be used on the skin. It is supposed to restore the skin and treat psoriasis.
Cajeput Essential Oil
This oil energizes the skin and acts as a light-counter irritant which is said to ease the irritation of psoriasis. If it is a counter irritant how can it reverse the irritation caused by psoriasis. This makes no sense at all. It seems like it would aggravate the irritation caused by the psoriasis.
Copaiba Essential Oil
This is an anti-inflammatory oil that may stop infections caused by psoriasis but if it cannot treat psoriasis then what good is the oil?
Evening Primrose Essential Oil
This oil contains a lot of Gamma Linolenic Acid and works the same as the other oil containing oil. It is not safe to apply to the skin because of the acid. Besides it doesn’t explain how this oil will treat psoriasis.
Jojoba Essential Oil
This oil is traditionally used to treat psoriasis and it is also a great skin moisturizer.
Tamanu Essential Oil
This is a healing tropical essential oil that is good for treating psoriasis and other skin ailments. It is a good skin moisturizer.
A lot of the above of the above essential oils listed above were unknown oils. Their reliability to treat psoriasis is in question. There were no studies referenced to verify they could treat psoriasis.
Scalp Psoriasis Oil Massage
In an applicator bottle, combine ½ cup of fractionated coconut oil, 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and 3 drops of oregano essential oil. Section your hair and start applying the oil from the applicator bottle. Use your fingertips to gently massage the healing oil blend into your scalp. Leave it on for at least 2 hours. Then wash your hair as usual, preferably with aca gentle on-sulfate shampoo.
Some essential oils to think about using if you ever suffer from psoriasis skin disease. Granted none of the treatments have any clinical support to prove they can treat psoriasis they may be worth trying out anyway. In all honesty the ones that contain acid in them would really be unsafe to apply to the skin.
